Dargaville & The Kauri Coast

The west coast's long stretches of beaches, sparkling harbours and magnificent kauri forests offer a stunning backdrop to any west coast experience. There are some fantastic walking and climbing tracks to follow, including the Waipoua Forest, the Waiotemarama Loop track, Arai Te Aru, Maungaraho Rock and Tokatoka Peak.

The Kauri Forest

The Kauri Coast is a fantastic place for exploration and adventure and one of Northland’s best attractions. Be sure not to miss The Matakohe Kauri Museum, the largest kauri tree in New Zealand, Tane Mahuta 'God of the Forest', the nature sanctuary of Trounson Kauri Park and the crystal-clear Kai Iwi Lakes. Also be sure to explore New Zealand's longest driveable beach (100km) Ripiro Beach, the Kaipara Harbour, the longest coastline in the Southern Hemisphere, and the majestic Pouto Peninsula.

Kai Iwi Lakes

The stunning Kai Iwi Lakes cover an area of 305ha are suitable for a range of water based recreational activities. These include boating, diving, fishing, sailboarding, swimming, yachting and water skiing.  Pine plantations covering some 60ha have been  established around the north eastern margins of the lakes.

An extensive walking track system has been developed within the reserve. Picnic facilities are also available for visitors to the area. 
 

Baylys Beach

Baylys Beach, 14km west of Dargaville, is part of New Zealand's longest beach (Ripiro Beach). Activities at Baylys Beach include coastal walks, golf, surfing, fishing, horse trekking and beach tours by 4WD bus.
